CHAPTER ELEVEN

Tuesday, January 13th.

12:01 a.m.

Gold Mine Hotel and Casino. Lafayette. Louisiana.

Annie sat on the sidewalk holding Linc’s head in her lap wishing the ambulance would hurry. “Find Farrell. I need Farrell.”

“I can’t leave you unprotected, boss. They just tried to kill you for chrissakes. Right out in the open.” Beck stood between Annie and the street with his gun in his hand. “I’ll find him for you as soon as we have some help here.”

Beck shoved his Sig into his waistband and covered it with his Gold Mine shirt when he heard the sirens. Two squads pulled up followed by an ambulance screaming around the corner. All the vehicles stopped at the curb two feet away from where Linc lay.

The paramedics ran with the stretcher. A quick look at the damage to Linc’s chest and they hurried as fast as they could go. Linc was on the stretcher, secured and gone.

“Trauma Unit,” called one of the attendants over his shoulder as they ran to the bus.

Covered in blood, Annie sobbed as Beck helped her to her feet. “He’s so young and so messed up.”

Beck supported her as she spoke to the first officers on the scene. “I can’t give y’all a statement. This is a classified op, but I can give you a number to call at the Pentagon.”

The uniformed officer smirked. “You’re messing with me, right ma’am?”

Annie pointed to the blood covering her and said, “Do I look like I’m kidding? Give me your name, officer, and the name of your boss.”

“Okay, ma’am. I’m calling the number.”

“I have to get changed and go to the trauma center.” Beck held the door open and supported Annie as they crossed the casino floor to the elevator lobby.

Nick came running up to them as they waited for the elevator. His brown eyes widened as he took in the blood and the look on Annie’s face. “What?”

“Bring everybody upstairs to the suite. Hurry Nicky.”
